Darwin Speaks 1.4

Charles Darwin, the renowned naturalist and geologist whose foundational contributions to the theory of evolution have profoundly shaped scientific understanding, is brought to life through innovative synthetic interview technology. Developed in collaboration between Duquesne University biology professor John Pollock and the Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center—creators of the Synthetic Interview platform—this interactive experience allows users to pose a selection of questions to a virtual Darwin, portrayed by Pittsburgh-based actor and Carnegie Mellon drama alumnus Randy Kovitz.

The range of questions encompasses Darwin's personal experiences, his groundbreaking principles of evolution, societal reactions to his discoveries, his childhood, personal idiosyncrasies, and other relevant topics. To enrich the dialogue, over a dozen contemporary experts—including biologists, religious authorities, an ACLU lawyer, and others—provide modern commentary and address inquiries that extend beyond Darwin’s 19th-century perspective.

Questions directed at Darwin have been derived from more than 1,000 interviews conducted with K-12 students and adults, distilled into the 199 most frequently asked questions. The responses, authored by Dr. David Lampe, are articulated in Darwin’s own words, drawing upon a substantial corpus of Darwin’s writings—such as notes, books, autobiographical materials, and correspondence available through the Darwin Correspondence Project.
